To eat or not to eat, that is the question

Things have kind of stagnated with Kylie this week.  She has continued to improve, but very slowly.  She is still in the hospital for two reasons (that we are aware of):  she needs to be able to eat and digest food so she can get off her IV, and she needs to come off oxygen in her nose.

I think I have explained before why she isn’t eating yet.  Her body is so traumatized from surgery that her stomach and intestines need to “wake up” and begin functioning again.  Apparently this is normal and not something to be overly concerned with… for now.  They thought she was ready to begin eating on Wednesday, but after less than 24 hours it became apparent that it was too soon.  Today they told Amy it would be a few days before they’ll try again, so who knows.

Since she came off the ventilator, Kylie has had one of those two pronged nose things (sorry to get so technical on you) giving her supplemental oxygen.  They wean her off it little by little until she can breathe room air on her own.  She’s still on it, and not tolerating it when they reduce the oxygen percentage too much.

Kylie seems very alert and awake these days.  I guess after 5 weeks, most babies are.   It is lots of fun to visit her, because she looks around and is very aware of her surroundings.

It seems that we keep hearing that she’ll come home in “about a week or two”.  It sounds encouraging, but when you hear that week after week, it can be a bit frustrating.  Right now they're telling us she'll be home in about a week or two.
