Friday, we found out a bit more detail on the kidney issue. Apparently, her right kidney is non-functional. The first exam, which I did not completely understand when I last wrote, showed no function of her right kidney, and very high reflux in her left. Reflux means when the kidney filters out toxins, they leak back in. This is no bueno, if you couldn’t guess. It is a problem that can possibly correct itself, though I am not sure how likely that is. I get the impression that it is a decent possibility, not a total long shot. As I wrote before, she will be on Amoxicillin for a while, as we wait and see how serious this problem will be. It will be quite a while until we know for sure- months, not days. We were supposed to sit down and go over everything with the kidney specialist today, but we didn’t find each other. We will meet tomorrow morning, so I should have more details after that of the second exam they conducted.
The other major problem, eating, is not resolving it’s self yet. Kylie is not sucking, so tube feeding is still a necessity. Occupational therapists came to see her yesterday. They are evaluating her mouth, hands, and other joints to see what they can do. The priority is helping her take a bottle, so she is no longer dependent on a tube. They are also considering splinting her hands to help them open. If you can’t tell from the pictures (I’ll upload more tomorrow), her hands are in fists. You can’t pry them open all the way, the joints just don’t work properly. Her elbows, wrists, and knees do not extend fully either. Hopefully they can do something to help her get flexibility, but again, I’m sure that is a very long process of trial and error over the next several years.
On an unrelated personal note, Dallin turned 2 yesterday. We celebrated with a Dora (his bilingual crush) cake and the Incredible Pizza Company. If you are not familiar with that place, it is kind of like Cici’s or Peter Piper, on steroids. I think pizza and root beer might be Dallin’s favorite meal.
One last thing, to any Jazz fans out there (please don’t make me name names): 84-75, final score game 1. Please accept my kindest regards. J
