little by little...

Today they took Kylie out of her bed with the warmer and put her in a normal crib.  She now has a shirt on and is swaddled to keep her warm.  You know the newborn shirts they give you in the hospital that fit for about a day?  It drowns her.  Oh well, at least it will fit for a while.  She was awake for 3 hours this morning and they said she was bored, so now she has a mobile above the crib.  Unfortunately, she was out like a light when we saw her.

Her heart seems to be doing fine, despite the aortic coarctation (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aortic_coarctation).  According to the cardiologist, surgery may not even be necessary.  Apparently, she has a very loud heart murmur, which made them think things were pretty bad, but the problems they anticipated are not materializing.

A second exam was done on her kidneys today.  The one from yesterday showed that she doesn’t rid her body of toxins as well as she should, but that won’t necessarily pose a problem either.  She is a prime candidate to get bladder infections, but we’ll just see how she does over the next few months.  She hasn’t had one yet, so hopefully the problem will correct its self.  We’ll find out about the second exam tomorrow.

One of the biggest hurdles left to her coming home is eating.  She isn’t taking enough from a bottle on her own to stop tube feeding, so until she can, she can’t come home.  She has only tried 2 or 3 times so far, so we aren’t really worried.  Give the kid a few days, she’ll be fine.

I’m not really a big fan of Wikipedia, but I also found a page that describes translocations, if you’re curious.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromosomal_translocation.  Kylie has an unbalanced translocation of the #6 and #14 chromosomes.  This isn’t a great explanation, but it is a start.
