First of all, the big news in Kylie's life:
I took Kylie to the hospital today for another swallow study. To recap, that is when they feed her barium at different consistencies and watch were it ends up. She will be 6 months old on Saturday and so they tried “pudding” consistency, which is basically baby food and went all the way down to “thin” which is the same as water. Our little lady was a champ and she swallowed the pudding and nectar (middle consistency) just fine. She still aspirated on the thin, but there is high hope for that to come soon. So tonight after a humble prayer of gratitude, we fed our baby for the first time via her mouth and stared in amazement as she swallowed that yucky rice cereal. We all took turns giving her a spoonful and she enjoyed the focused attention as much as the sugar-laced food. We are so pleased with her progress and couldn’t wait to share her good news. Thanks again for all the prayers.
Notice the silver spoon for her first bite, that
is the same one Emily, Dallin and I all used for our first meals.
Life has, of course, been filled with other news these past few weeks. I turned 30 on September 22nd. It was a great day, my family made sure of it! Emily was so excited for her gift and had told David weeks before what she wanted to get me. He took her to the store and she picked out a beautiful bouquet of roses because she knew I loved flowers. Isn’t she great?! David and I went out to dinner and then to a comedy club that evening with a group of friends. It was a great day.
Dallin is working on potty training. He is the one working on it, not me. I have given up. He is so darn independent and decides when and what he wants on his bottom and when he will go and not. He is, however, getting better all on his own and one day maybe he’ll actually wear that Diego underwear he picked out.
Emily is still loving school and continues to have all of my unfortunate genes. Not only did she inherit my childhood milk allergy, but now our little lady is getting glasses too. She’ll just need them for school and reading and any kind of focus activity, not running around and playing. I had to wear glasses at 4 years old too—sorry kid! We spent a very long time picking out the perfect frames and finally the pink Jasmine ones were a hit. They should be ready in a few days.
On September 30th we went out to David’s family’s home for Sunday dinner and to have a belated celebration for my birthday. After dinner, but before the presents and dessert, Kylie began to have some problems. She wasn’t breathing well, was choking pretty bad and felt really hot. We took her temperature and it was 103.5. Scary stuff. David and I left the kids and ran out the door and to the
Anyway turns out Kylie had a urinary track infection and for a short time they also thought she had pneumonia. That turned out to be overzealous medical personnel. We were discharged mid afternoon on Monday and how grateful David and I were to get out of our Church clothes from the day before. At least David stopped on the way downtown and bought some flip-flops for me, heels were not cutting it at 1am. She is on a pretty heavy dose of antibiotics, but doing well now. Child, please quit scaring us so badly! This infection is due from the one not-so-well-functioning kidney. These were expected, but not on a Sunday night and not to hit her so strongly.
